ABOUT THE ARTISANS
Joyya
Joyya exists to spark good in places marked by extreme poverty and modern-day slavery. Sparking goods means providing sustainable employment to women and men from hard-hit communities. The work helps them support their families and keep their kids in school. “Sustainability“ means supporting farmers and local businesses with organic cotton and recycled materials. Joyya helps their staff re-imagine their lives, identities, and futures, and those of their children.
Street Hope
Street Hope is comprised of sixteen women in Mathare Slum in Nairobi, Kenya, who have lived most of their lives on the streets. Many were orphaned as children and have only known a life of poverty, while others became homeless due to difficult circumstances, forcing them to do whatever necessary to survive. Mercy House Global began training and employing these women in 2016, and one by one they have moved into homes, gaining skills and confidence, and overcoming addiction.
Local Hope
Mercy House Global is located just outside Houston, Texas, a city of more than 70,000 refugees one of the largest populations in the USA. MHG employs about ten women who have resettled in Houston. This group of artisans is called Local Hope, and created candles, spa products, and home decor for the MHG fair trade line.
Local Hope also supports women in Houston, TX who are coming out of a life of oppression and are in a vulnerable situation. This group of artisans create our candle and spa products.
In addition to job creation, MHG provides programs to support the local refugee community, including ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) and empowerment luncheons that offer fellowship and skill training.
Sanaa Collection
Sanaa Collection is an art collection created by rescued teen mothers in Kenya. By purchasing these cards, you are joining us to change the lives of women around the world by empowering them through dignified work. The proceeds from the sale of these cards go directly to supporting our maternity homes in Kenya.
Forged in Hope is the newest artisan group supported by Mercy House Global. The group started with an artisan named Stephen who expressed himself through creating jewelry. He established his upcycled brass jewelry business in the heart of Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa.
After Stephen died of typhoid, his wife Maureen continued his legacy and grew production volume to ensure ongoing work for the employees. From tragedy, Maureen has built a strong jewelry business, and she has also invested in multiple businesses in Kibera, creating opportunities for others and stimulating economic growth.
